Arnault was born on 5 March 1949, in Roubaix, France. He is the son of Jean Léon Arnault, who was the owner of Ferrel-Sévinel, a civil engineering company. Arnault studied at the École Polytechnique de France Palaiseau, one of the most prestigious engineering schools, graduating with an M.Sc. degree in 1971. After graduation, he joined his father’s company in 1976 and succeeded him as chairman in 1979.
