ssc chsl exam pattern
Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) examination is conducted to recruit eligible candidates for various clerical posts in Central Government Departments.
The exam takes place in three levels:
- Tier I (Computer Based Examination),
- Tier II (Descriptive Paper), and Tier III (Skill Test/ Typing Test).
- Tier I (Computer Based Examination): Tier I exam consists of four sections. General Intelligence, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness.
The exam is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode and consists of total 200 multiple choice questions with total time duration of 75 minutes. Each correct answer carries 1 mark, while 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
Tier II (Descriptive Paper): Tier II exam consists of one paper, i.e. English Language and Comprehension. The paper is conducted in descriptive type format and carries a total of 200 marks. The paper is of total time duration of 1 hour.

Tier III (Skill Test/Typing Test): This is the last stage of the exam and consists of Skill/Typing Test. Skill test is conducted to assess the typing speed and accuracy of the candidate. The skill test is conducted in two formats. Computer Based Test (CBT) or Offline Test (PBT). Typing test is conducted to assess the typing speed and accuracy of the candidate. The typing test is of total time duration of 10 minutes and consists of a total speed of 35 words per minute (WPM) for English and 30 WPM for Hindi.
The final selection of the candidate is based on their performance in all the three stages of the examination.
